This summer, the Johnson family enjoyed a fantastic cycling tour through the Loire Valley, traveling from Blois to Saumur. They stayed in delightful accommodations that offered both comfort and charm, enhancing their overall experience. Each evening, they relished delicious local cuisine at various handpicked restaurants, adding a culinary delight to their journey. The tour was highlighted by visits to numerous magnificent châteaux, each brimming with history and grandeur. The leisurely pace of the trip allowed the family to fully appreciate the scenic beauty and cultural richness of the region, making for an unforgettable adventure.
On day 1, after arrival in our hotel in Blois, we took the time to explore Blois. We decided to visit the Chateau Royal of Blois, which the kids enjoyed with a digital visit “Tour with the HistoPad” >> The digital tools of the château.
On day 4, we were amazed by the number of castles we passed while cycling again. After visiting Chateau Villandry, with a maze in the lovely garden, we decided to give the Chateau Azay-le-Rideau a miss. However, we did enjoy a nice picnic along the water, right next to the castle. When we arrived in Huismes, a lovely accommodation in a rural village, our host Bertrand told us all the history of the property and even showed us around the caves of the building. Impressive and gave such a personal touch to our stay.
Of course, the kids enjoyed the fact of having the swimming pool and trampoline in the spacious garden. The picture is from a former oven where they used to dry plums in.
On day 5, during our cycle route from Huismes to Saumur, we had a short stop in Chinon where we discovered this tiny chapel Sainte-Radegonde, with an underground structure, located on the hillside while entering Chinon. Some walls are decorated with several murals, one dates back to the 12th century. The water from the wells were said reputed to be miraculous..! This short visit was for free.
On day 6, we had booked an extra night in Saumur with French Bike Tours, so we could visit The Cadre noir of Saumur, The French Horse and Riding Institute, as besides cycling, we love horse riding. We had booked tickets online for a guided tour and “the matinales”, where you watch the riding masters of the Cadre noir in the main arena. This was amazing! >> The Cadre noir of Saumur.
This was a nice final of the great cycling trip we did as a family. We strongly recommend this trip!
